Thank you so much to everyone who attended the AGM & Presentation evening for our 2023-24 season on Thursday night at Shaw Heath Social Club. The evening was a huge success and the attendance of 61 was the highest since 1987. As always, the vast array of trophies were in gleaming condition thanks to David Taylor's efforts and it was great to see Chris Parker of Parkers Knutsford Removals presenting the cheques and trophies for the competition that he kindly sponsors. A highlight of the evening had to be Frances Evans not only receiving his runners-up trophy for the Rotary Cup but a suprise lifetime achievement award for an amazing 60 years of playing in our league! Many thanks to Scott Marshall and the Shaw Heath club for looking after us so well and for putting on some really nice food. On now to the summer league and then to next season which will hopefully be even better! Mobberley C 4 - 3 Shaw Heath
Heald Green 5 - 2 Tatton B Mere A 4 - 3 Tatton C Mobberley B 6 - 1 Wilmslow Cons B Morley Green 5 - 2 Mere B Wilmslow Cons A 1 - 6 Mobberley A The KADASL season came to a thrilling conclusion this week with 3 teams all in with a chance of taking the title. Long time leaders Shaw Heath were feeling the pressure having seen a 12 point lead earlier in the season cut to just 2 points. They played their final game on Tuesday against Mobberley C and quickly found themselves 3-0 down with Mobberley's Alex Wetton scoring 127 points in his frame. With the title slipping through their fingers they crucially fought back to take the final 3 frames and, whilst it wasn't enough to prevent defeat on the night, it left Morley Green needing 6 points and Mere A needing 7 points from their respective Thursday matches. Mere A didn't manage the whitewash victory that they needed but a 4-3 win against Tatton C continued their stunning end of season run to give them a 10th win in a row and a 3rd placed finish. Alec Wright (Mere) and Chris Parker (Tatton) both scored 100+ points in their frames. Morley Green trailed Shaw Heath by 19 points at one stage in the season and they knew that they needed at least 6 points to complete a remarkable fightback. They won the first 2 frames thanks to a ton plus score from captain Paul Hart and a big victory that secured the inidvidual best performance for Vic McAfee. Ultimately, their challenge was ended as they narrowly lost the middle frames - both on the final black. They won the final 2 frames to complete a 5-2 victory that was enough to secure a 3rd consecutive runners up spot but it was a case of what might have been as they were one black ball away from the title. That meant that Scott Marshall's Shaw Heath team were champions by the narrowest of margins. They were level on points with Morley Green with the title decided on the number of wins - 16 for Shaw Heath compared to 13 for Morley. The title is Shaw Heath's second in the last 3 years following a dominant victory in 2021/22. Elsewhere the final places were decided as Heald Green's 5-2 victory over Tatton B secured 4th place in their debut season. This was despite 122 points from Tatton Captain Andy Long who completed a fine week having won the pairs the night before. Mobberley B's fine finish to the season continued - they secured 6th position with a 6-1 victory over Wilmslow Cons B, helped by Hank Pasquill's 100 point frame. Mobberley A and Wilmslow A had a dress rehearsal for their Team KO final next week and it is Mobberley who will go into the final with a spring in their step after a 6-1 victory. The H Astles Pairs Competition was decided at Mobberley Victory Hall on Wednesday night and it was Steve Bond and Andy Long who took the title in fine style. They defeated Wilmslow's Matt Dale and Dave Wilkinson 2-0 to make the final where they would meet another Wilmslow pair following Laughlan and Callum Anderson's 2-0 victory over Mobberley's Leung Yu and Alan Williams.
After a fine tournament, the final proved a step too far for the young brothers as Bond & Long potted tehir way to a 2-0 victory. The victory was Andy's first pairs win and Steve's 4th - his last one coming over 10 years ago. Steve also win the Taylor Trophy and has a chance to complete a fine individual season as he looks to add the TC Jay Trophy next week. Tatton A's Pete Blain added to his growing list of honours with victory in the Rotary Cup this week. The Rotary Cup is the league's individual handicap knockout competition and the semi-final saw Tatton's Frances Evans up against Wilmslow Conservative Club's Ralp Robertson.
Frances made the most of his 38 point handicap advantage to take the first frame before Ralph improved to comfortably take the second. A tense 3rd frame came down to the final colours and Ralph came agaonisingly close to victory but the final black nestled in the jaws of the pocket leaving Frances a simple tap-in to secure his place in the final. "Not bad for an 87 year old" said Frances as his brilliant effort saw him become the oldest ever finalist. The final proved to be a step too far for Frances as a strong performance from Pete, including a fine 45 break, saw him take a comfortable 2-0 victory. Pete added the Rotary to the TC Jay Trophy that he won in such fine style at the end of last season. Bruce Tully added to his long list of titles last weekend with victory in the Parkers Knutsford Removals Champions Trophy.
The competition was held on Wilmslow Conservative Club's fantastic new tables and a strong field with players from all of the league's member clubs was made up of the various competition winners along with the league's lowest handicap players. 16 players were split into 4 groups of 4 and the group winners were: Jon Berry (Shaw Heath) Mike Sullivan (Wilmslow) Paul Adkin (Mobberley) Bruce Tulley (Mobberley) The semi-finals saw Jon Berry edge out Mike Sullivan before Bruce Tulley completed a marathon victory over Mobberley A club mate Paul Adkin, who's fine 39 break proved to be in vain. The best of 3 final was fittingly between the 2 lowest handicap players and proved to be a tight and tense affair. Bruce, aided by a 30 break along the way, ran out a 2-1 winner to secure the £75 prize and his 4th Champions Trophy victory. There was some fine snooker played throughout the day with Paul Hart's break of 49 proving the top effort on the day whilst Mark Newall and Graham Walls also had 30+ breaks. Beaten finalist Jon Berry takes home £35 for his first KADASL competition outing and the losing semi finalists both pocket £20. As always, many thanks to Wilmslow Cons for hosting us and to outr competition secretary David for organising another well run competition. · Congratulations to Mobberley A's Flinders, Adkin & Newall who today won the 2024 Three Player Trophy in what was a fantastic day of snooker at Mobberley Victory Hall Memorial Club The league resurrected the 3 Player Trophy for the first time since 2018 and we were really pleased to see over 11 teams entered - so many that we had to hold prelim matches to reduce the field to 8 teams on the day. The finalists saw Mobberley A up against Tatton A but both teams could easily have gone out in earlier rounds. Mobberley survived a black ball finish in the final frame against Heald Green and a similarly close finish against Wilmslow Cons in the semi final that could have gone either way. Tatton A needed David Taylor to cooly dish up the pink and black in the deciding frame to win their semi final having won their quarter final in even more dramatic circumstances - David clawing back a huge 78 point deficit to get his team over the line in the deciding frame. Tatton's Pete Blain won the first frame of the final only to see Mobberley's Mark Newall win the second frame to leave Ned Flinders going into the final frame with a 45 point lead over David. Despite their earlier heroics, the gap proved too much for Tatton to overcome and Ned Flinders played a calm and composed frame to steer his side to victory. The trio secured their third 3 Player Trophy - 19 years after their first! All of the players created a brilliant atmosphere on the day and a number of players stayed behind after exiting the competition to watch and support the rest of the competition. A big thanks has to go to our fantastic tea lady Vinni Rossi who did a brilliant job with the early morning catering and to Heald Green's Geoff Burns who kindly refferee'd the deciding frame of a semi-final and the final. The day was a great success and its safe to say that the Three Player Competition is well and truly back on the KADASL calendar. Week 13
